To get recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI answers, you make your site easy to trust and easy to quote: fast, well-structured pages that answer real questions directly, backed by outside proof that you are legitimate. This is generative engine optimization — and it is quickly becoming as important as ranking on Google.
Why this matters now
AI answer engines cite only a handful of sources per answer — often two to seven, where a Google page shows ten links. When a buyer asks an AI which agency, tool, or approach to choose, being one of those few cited sources puts you directly inside the recommendation. The surface is smaller and the intent is higher, which is exactly why it is worth pursuing.
It starts with strong SEO
The good news: most of this is just good SEO. AI engines lean heavily on the same signals — crawlable, fast, trustworthy pages — and often draw from the same top search results. So the technical SEO checklist is step one, not a separate track. If search engines cannot read and trust your site, neither can the models that learn from them.
The layer on top
- Answer the question directly, first. Lead each page with a clear, quotable answer. Models lift concise, self-contained statements — bury the answer and you lose the citation.
- Be specific. Concrete numbers, named tools, and honest trade-offs get cited; vague claims do not. "This cuts cost 80 to 90 percent" beats "this is cheaper."
- Structure for extraction. Clear headings, lists, and FAQ sections make your content easy to pull apart and reuse.
- Earn outside proof. Reviews and listings on independent directories are among the most-cited sources. Being present where the models look is half the battle — the same fundamentals we built our SEO Insights plugin around.
How to know it is working
Track it directly: once a month, ask ChatGPT and Perplexity the questions your customers ask, and see whether you are mentioned. Citation rate — not just ranking position — is the new scoreboard. And remember it compounds slowly, the same way ordinary SEO takes months to build.
The honest caveat
No one can guarantee an AI will cite you, and anyone promising that is bluffing. What you can do is make your site the obvious thing to cite — clear, fast, specific, and trusted — and that is squarely within your control.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO different from SEO?
It is a layer on top. Roughly eighty percent is fundamental SEO; the rest is writing and structuring content to be quoted by AI. You do not choose between them — you do both.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. Citations are earned through trust and relevance, not ads. That is what makes them valuable — and why the work is worth doing properly.
How long does it take?
Like SEO, months rather than weeks. It builds as your site earns trust and the engines re-crawl and re-learn.
